Canine repellent

If you are outside a lot you have probably noticed these walkers carrying sticks, this seems to be there protection against loose dogs or I guess any other animal they may encounter. I am not to sure how well some of these people could protect themselves with this stick they carry but I would think in many cases the dog would win. If you know one of these walkers here is a great gift so they can stop carrying those sticks.

Pool Safety.

Unfortunately over 200 children drown in swimming pools each year the American Red Cross suggest pool owners make pool safety a top priority. There are several easy steps you can you can take.

  • Pools should be secured with appropriate barriers. Surround your pool with at least a 4 foot fence. Place a safety cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and consider putting in a pool alarm.
  • Always supervise children  never allow anyone to swim alone. Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a U. S. Coast Guard approved life jacket.
  • Ensure everyone in the home knows how to swim, there are many age appropriate swimming classes offered in most communities.
  • Ensure all members of the home understand how to respond to an emergency and learn CPR.

How should I carry and store pepper spray?

Pepper spray should be stored in a secure place at room temperature and kept away from children. Make sure it is easily accessible, there are usually no warnings prior to an attack so you want to make sure you can get to your pepper spray. The size of most pepper sprays make it easy to be kept in a pocket, experiment with different methods of carrying and practice to ensure you can retrieve it quickly in an emergency. The keychain pepper sprays are great for easy accessibility and come in many different styles. Pepper sprays should not be kept in a car for long periods of time as the heat can damage the seals in some models.

Wireless motion activated alarms.

Wireless motion activated alarms are a great extra layer of protection these are very easy to install and can be used in several different applications many people use them in the driveway or walkway leading up to the front door, this is very useful if there are parts of the house where the doorbell can not be heard. They are also great for small business owners either in an office or a store placed by the entrance they can alert you to a new customer.

Drink guard.

Here is a great product for those who have college students, it would be nice to think that they would never party but we all know that's not how it is in the real world. Send them off with a little security, date rape drugs are out there so make sure your student is aware and give them a little heads up.

What is the difference between a stun gun and a taser?

There is a big difference between a stun gun and a taser, and depending on where you live there can be different laws for each, so it is important to know the difference before you make a purchase.
To begin, a stun gun is made to deliver a  painful electric shock from direct contact causing an attacker to move. Tasers are a brand and actually shoot two probes or darts at the attacker. These darts are connected to the device through wires and the electric shock is sent through the wires immobilizing  the attacker.

The big difference between the two is the distance needed between you and the attacker. Both are very effective

What is a Diversion Safe?

What is a Diversion Safe? Diversion Safes or hidden safes are designed to look like common household items and they allow you to hide valuables in them, a common Diversion Safe that I remember when I was younger was the one that looked like a rock many people used these to hide a spare house key, these still exist today.  These days there are many to choose from in all different sizes and styles you can easily find safes that resemble many normal household products like soda cans, water bottles, paint cans and much more.

Why use a Diversion Safe most burglars are looking for the easy target when using a Diversion Safe you can store your valuables right out in the open in one of the many options your jewelry can easily fit in a book safe or one of the cans. Diversion Safes have been around for many years and for good reason they work.

Run, Hide, Fight

I recently had a customer who purchased a tactical pen, he had said he heard about them during a company training on active shooters there are several videos out there on this topic and a lot of businesses are conducting training for employees which in my opinion is great. I was in the Navy for 22 years and I do know that proper training works, the only issue I see in the training most businesses are conducting is the amount of training given, most companies are doing this training annually  I am not saying this isn't a good idea but for training to work especially for something involving a high stress situation it has to be more frequent. In the Navy we are all taught to be firefighters this starts in bootcamp and continues throughout your career the best training is the hands on training and the most realistic scenarios but most important is the frequency of the training yes during what seems like endless drills we do complain but I can say when faced with a real situation most fall back on the training.

I suspect that this type of training will become a lot more common and in the next few years most companies will be adding active shooter training to their required training list. At Best Security Protection we do not claim to have the solution but I hope to have some tools for people to add to their emergency situation kit. If run and hide do not work the only option left is to fight not everyone is carrying a handgun and there are a lot of places where you can not carry even if you have a conceal carry liscense but there are several other ways to arm yourself. In closing I want to be clear pepper spray or a stun gun would not be my first choice in an active shooter situation (and yes that's what I sell) but at this moment in time I do not carry a handgun and if I am in a situation where fight is my only option I want something to improve my odds.
